A Sober Christian
John 16:33 NIV
“In this world there will be trouble. But take heart! I have overcome this world.”
Here Jesus makes it clear that, “in this world there WILL be trouble.”
He is direct. He leaves no doubt. He does not waiver.
There is no….”well…some of you may…have troubles….every now and then,” in His words.
I have to believe this means everyone. Rich, poor and in between, from the average every day America citizen, to the undocumented immigrant, to the righteous, to the sinner, to the believer, to the agnostic, to the sober man and the lost soul in the midst of their alcoholism or addiction, we ALL have troubles.
I remember at times feeling so overwhelmed by my troubles that getting drunk or high seemed to be the only way to get away from them. In time this attitude led me to what I considered at the time to be hell on earth.
Isn’t it great that Christ immediately, after confirming the bad news about our troubles, tells us to “take heart!” He then tells us that He has “overcome this world.”
When I have faith, and work to have Christ in my life, I find that I have the courage to face my troubles. Today I no longer need to retreat into the darkness of alcoholism and addiction to escape them.
As a sober Christian I find great comfort in the fact that my worldly troubles mean nothing to Jesus.
Today I can take heart in the grace of Christ and find the courage to stay sober for another day.
Take heart my friend and be grateful. Your troubles mean nothing to Him.
