A Sober Christian
John 6:40 NIV
Jesus declared, “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”
I have used, and will continue to use, the New Testament of the Holy Bible as a tool in my search to find and understand God’s will.
In this passage we have the words of Jesus himself, giving us a specific example of his Father’s will. He tells us that everyone who looks to, and believes in Him, will receive eternal life. This is straight forward and makes it clear that if you believe you will experience the eternal reward. When I read these words they seem so simple to me.
Why is it then that I do not have the capacity, the faith, to live my life in such a fashion that I follow the Father’s will each and every day of my life? Why do I still allow myself to be manipulated by the temptations of the world?
After all, today I am free of the chains of alcoholism and drug addiction. And in my freedom, I have come to believe that my sobriety, my freedom, and my life today, are gifts given to me in mercy and grace. Today I come to believe that these gifts all come from the Father through the grace and mercy of the Son.
As a sober Christian I am blessed to have this understanding. At one time, before this knowledge was revealed to me, I had no freedom, and in turn, only had faith in what I could physically hold on to.
Today I understand that all of my blessings, especially the blessing of sobriety, come from the Father. As I remain sober one day at a time, I have come to believe that my faith and my sobriety continue to align themselves closer and closer together. I believe that it is this understanding that helps me to stay sober today, for these 24 hours.
Today I am grateful for the Book of John and Christ’s straightforward example of the Father’s will. Today I am going to focus on the 24 hours at hand, seeking God’s will, while praying for understanding and courage….today. If I stay vigilant, one day at a time, one day, the greatest of all rewards wait for me…if I have faith.
May you understand and have the courage to follow His will this day.
